Natural Hot Springs

Hot water bubbling out of the ground is truly amazing, one of the natural wonders of the world. What sort of magic did indigenous Americans associate with this phenomenon before there was a scientific explanation?

I like to soak in these natural springs. When I'm traveling in the Northwest, I check to see if there are any in the area. In Washington there are springs on the Olympic Peninsula, in the Cascade Mountains and near the Columbia Gorge. There are numerous springs throughout the mountainous areas of Idaho. And in Southeast Oregon on the Owyhee River is the most spectacular of all, a hundred yard chasm in the desert spilling hot water in a stream and falling down into the Owyhee. Here is a source of information about hot springs:

  • I have not included details of how to find these hot springs. The bible is the book "The Hiker's Guide to Hot Springs of the Pacific Northwest" by Evie Litton. You can also find directions on the site linked above. Please don't email me asking for directions. If you don't have enough initiative to Google directions or to buy the Evie Litton book, you shouldn't be out in the woods alone.

Read here about how to use one of my images on your web pages.
